They Do Not Seek Good From Good

Mage Media Productions

Will Anya choose the future or stay in the past?

1 Jan 1970

PERFORMANCE DETAILS

Post-Soviet Podolsk, Russia, Spring 1993. In the Mikhailov family's struggle-ridden 'khrushevka' apartment, the ambitious Anya must make a decision about who she is destined to be. Amidst the same daily schedule, rampant with traditionalism, she must choose whether to follow her ‘firebird of freedom’. Dare she hold the newborn hand of an unknown era, for a greater good? Will she choose to look back to history and stay, or look forward into the future and flee?

The kitchen, a post-Soviet place of cultural discussion and political reflection, reveals conversations that ebb with emotion and complicated relationship dynamics. The play holds up a mirror to our own existence, reflecting ever-present issues of cultural change and social unrest.

Exploring generational conflicts during a socio-politically charged time, They Do Not Seek Good From Good combines neo-Chekhovian naturalism, kitchen sink drama, and tragicomedy for the 21st century.
