Is it really your mother tongue if the words get stuck in your throat? My Mother Tongue Wants To Disown Me is a dramatic comedy, one woman show about a Romanian girl 'Madalina' and the strained relationship with her culture and mother. Most immigrants struggle with how the success of assimilating often means the loss of part of their identity.
As Madalina tries to erase certain parts of herself by changing her name and only speaking English she ends up in a heated argument with her mom; exactly those where you regret everything you say. But as Madalina decides to look more into her culture because of a school assignment she starts finding photos and letters from stories her mum never told her.
This is a play about the deep nostalgia we all feel for home despite not being very connected to it.
