Taiwan's Sun Son Theatre presents Lament of the Wandering Head, a work rooted in the Southeast Asian legend of the flying human head. The company transforms this myth into a metaphor for the displacement and collective trauma of Chinese diaspora communities across the twentieth century and beyond.
At its centre is a Malaysian Chinese woman living in Taiwan, tracing the currents of a restless, scattered history. Performed by Taiwanese and Penang-born artists, the work weaves live music, physical movement, and poetic language across Penang Hokkien and Mandarin — invoking the ghosts of colonial history while asking urgent questions about identity and belonging today.
Sun Son Theatre is known for the seamless integration of live music, physical movement, and drama. Nominated for Taiwan's Taishin Arts Award and shortlisted at the Taipei Theatre Awards, Lament of the Wandering Head comes to Voila! Festival 2026.

★★★★★ 'Some passages — to the forgotten corners of consciousness, or the wilder reaches of the soul — and they can only be opened by a powerful shock to the senses. Sun Son Theatre has a gift for doing exactly this. Lament of the Wandering Head draws on mythical figures to explore the human condition, using percussion, gongs, and wind instruments to set the scene, the body to shape imagery, and language to shake the mind awake. It is, in every sense, a poetry of the senses taken to its limit. This process of transformation opens something in the audience — a feeling that the self and the world are, at their roots, inseparable.'- Jury Citation, 2nd Taipei Theatre Awards Best Independent Spirit Award
