now, and at the hour of our death, amen

Camden People's Theatre

Maria’s very Catholic grandmother is dying. She prays for Maria to find a boyfriend every night. But Maria is gay, and she wants Granny to know, so that she doesn’t send a man looking for her from beyond the grave. But Granny is extremely homophobic and believes all gay people will burn in hell. Everyone in the family is against this. “Just let the old lady die in peace.” Is Maria selfish for wanting to tell Granny? Or a liar for keeping the truth? During a night spent at the hospital, Maria needs to make a decision.

This autobiographical, comedic and absurdist piece is a reflection on growing up as a queer person in an extremely religious household and country - Brazil - and how we carry that Catholic guilt throughout our lives.
